Character Generation

Character generation works as normal in Spirit of the Century, taking into account my normal house rules and the phases listed below.

Phases

  • Phase 1: What Are You From?: This phase covers the character's cultural and social origin, from birth till young adulthood. The player should choose two aspects for his character representing this time of his life. These aspects should deal with the character's childhood. Is he a Hardy Barbarian or a Decadent Noble? Perhaps she was Raised by the Sisters of Set or was Sold Into Slavery.
  • Phase 2: What Is Best In Life?: This phase covers the character's adult life and history. The player should choose two aspects for his character representing this time of his life. Is the character a Hardened Mercenary or a Master of the Hidden Art? Is she a Mistress of Poisons or Scion of the Guild of Assassins?
  • Phase 3: Action!: This phase covers the character's first pulp novel! Each player needs to come up with a title for this novel, in a fashion reminiscent of the pulps. The general pattern is: Character Name and the Adventurous Thing!, for example, Conan in… the Emerald of the Serpent Cult! The player should think up a brief outline of this novel; this outline should be brief — about as brief as the summary on the back of a paperback book — and then choose two aspects suitable for this novel.
  • Phase 4: Guest Star: In this phase, the character guest stars in another character's novel. The players can determine this randomly or simply choose among themselves. The character's player should discuss with the other player how he made an impact in that player's character's novel, and choose two aspects suitable for guest starring in the novel.
  • Phase 5: Guest Star: In this phase, the character again guest stars in another character's novel. The players can again determine this randomly or choose, though you can only guest star in a specific novel once. The character's player should discuss with the other player how he made an impact in that player's character's novel, and choose two aspects suitable for guest starring in the novel.

Skills

  • Drive: The Drive skill is called Ships and deals with all manner of watercraft.
  • Guns: The Guns skill is called Archery, and is used for all ranged weapons. Nearly all Guns stunts are valid for this skill, as well as the Weapons stunts dealing with ranged weapons. Remove the Custom Firearm stunt; instead, add the Weapon of Legend stunt from Weapons to the Archery stunt list as well.
  • Pilot: Remove the Pilot skill entirely.
  • Weapons: The Weapons skill represents melee weapon combat only.
